Prison Chaplaincy Training

We spent two days at the Malawi Prison Service Training Centre at Mapanga, considering the important role of chaplaincy in the well-being of prisoners and reduction of reoffending.

Although well-established within the prison culture in the UK, chaplaincy is still in its infancy in Malawi.

It was a privilege to spend a couple of days with key officers within the chaplaincy team, who work with limited resources for the spiritual and physical care of inmates.

Brother Jim was able to bring his extensive chaplaincy experience to bear, leading the two days of training on Defining, Developing and Delivering chaplaincy services.

Day 2 of the training started with a short time of chorus singing.

Underpinning the training was the example of the Lord Jesus who Tamed an Uncontrollable Demoniac and Touched an Undesirable Leper, reminding us his ability and readiness to engage with the outcasts of his society, and our responsibility to do the same.

As part of our commitment to the spiritual and physical welfare of inmates, we were able to familiarise the chaplains present with the hygiene pack and Bible Correspondence Lesson ministries in which SALT is involved. These were very warmly received.
